Defensive Driving 101: How to Avoid Car Accidents on the Road
Picture this: you’re driving home from work when suddenly a distracted driver swerves into your lane. Car accidents happen in split seconds, but defensive driving skills can help you avoid them entirely. At Peruzzi Collision Center, we see the aftermath of preventable crashes daily, which is why we’re sharing these essential defensive driving techniques to keep you safer on the road.
Stay Alert and Eliminate Distractions
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that distracted driving claimed 3,275 lives in 2023. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds—at 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field blindfolded. Keep your phone out of reach, adjust mirrors and seats before driving, and stay focused on the task at hand.
Maintain Safe Following Distance
Many car accidents result from tailgating and sudden stops. Follow the three-second rule: pick a fixed object ahead, and ensure three seconds pass before you reach the same point after the vehicle in front of you does. In poor weather or heavy traffic, increase this distance to four or five seconds.
Scan for Hazards Continuously
Truly safe drivers constantly scan their environment, checking mirrors every five to eight seconds and looking ahead 12 to 15 seconds down the road. Watch for aggressive drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and potential road hazards. This early detection gives you precious time to react safely.
Control Your Speed and Emotions
Speeding and aggressive driving are two other major contributors to accidents. Stay calm, maintain appropriate speeds for conditions, and remember that arriving a few minutes late is better than not arriving at all.
