3 Steps to Disinfect Your Car

Everyone knows that the best way to flatten the curve of the coronavirus and prevent the spread of illness is to stay home as much as possible. Unfortunately, some trips outdoors are inevitable — but there are a few steps that you can take to limit your risk when you do need to travel. No matter if you’re an essential worker heading to a day on the job or you just need to head to your local pharmacy to pick up some medicine, use these quick and easy tips to disinfect your ride.

  • Wipe down the exterior areas. Grab a disinfectant wipe and wipe down your exterior handles and gas cap every time you ride. You’re likely to touch these surfaces most often after making contact with another person, a gas pump handle, or another germy surface. Most household wipes will do this job well.

  • Take care of your interior. If you’re the only one riding in your car, you can get away with wiping down only the most-touched surfaces in your car. Use a disinfectant wipe to wipe down your steering wheel, gear shift, and interior handle.

If someone else has been riding with you, you may want to wipe down the entire interior of your vehicle. Vehicle interiors are more delicate than most kitchen counters. You can purchase your own interior disinfectant from an automotive store, or you can create your own gentle cleanser by mixing a drop or two of antibacterial soap in with a spray bottle of water. Do not apply rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer to the interior of your vehicle — this will cause your leather to warp.

  • Clean out garbage and inspect for damage. After you’ve disinfected your vehicle, take the time to clean out anything that can become a hotbed for germs — including crumbs, takeout garbage, and half-finished beverages. You’ll also want to take a survey of your vehicle and ensure that you don’t need car body or windshield repair in Bucks County.
